Russia Launches Massive Drone Assault on Ukraine, Kyiv Reports Widespread Attacks
Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks against Ukraine since the start of the war, deploying hundreds of drones in a massive assault that targeted multiple regions across the country, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian authorities said the large scale attack began during daylight hours and appeared designed to overwhelm the country’s air defence systems through the simultaneous use of hundreds of drones. Explosions and air raid alerts were reported in several cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv, Kherson, and regions close to NATO borders in western Ukraine.
Officials confirmed that at least several people were killed and many others injured as residential areas, energy facilities, transportation infrastructure, and government buildings came under attack. Emergency teams were deployed across affected regions to respond to fires, structural damage, and casualties caused by the strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. He warned that the drone assault could be followed by missile strikes and described the operation as one of the most intense aerial offensives of the war so far.
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency said Russia’s strategy appeared aimed at exhausting Ukrainian air defences by flooding the skies with drones arriving from multiple directions, including routes near the Belarus border. Military analysts noted that Russian forces have increasingly adapted drone warfare tactics to bypass Ukraine’s interception systems.
The assault came shortly after the end of a temporary ceasefire linked to Victory Day commemorations in Russia. Ukrainian officials said Moscow resumed attacks almost immediately after the truce expired, launching hundreds of drones and aerial bombs against cities and infrastructure targets.
The scale of the attack also raised alarm among neighbouring NATO countries. Poland reportedly scrambled fighter jets and heightened military readiness as Russian strikes moved closer to the alliance’s eastern border regions.
Despite renewed international discussions around possible peace negotiations, fighting between Russia and Ukraine has intensified in recent weeks. Both sides have continued carrying out long range drone attacks, targeting energy facilities, military sites, and strategic infrastructure.

Russia has repeatedly denied intentionally targeting civilians, although thousands of people have been killed since the war began in 2022. Meanwhile, Ukraine has expanded its own drone operations deep inside Russian territory, particularly against oil facilities and military infrastructure.
