Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine as Spring Offensive Intensifies
Russia has intensified its military campaign in Ukraine, launching one of its largest coordinated attacks in recent weeks with a combination of drone strikes, missile barrages, and renewed ground offensives. The escalation has raised concerns that Moscow may be initiating a broader spring campaign aimed at breaking Ukrainian defences along key frontlines.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia deployed nearly 400 long-range drones overnight, accompanied by dozens of missiles, in a sweeping assault that struck multiple regions across the country. The scale and timing of the attack mark a significant increase in hostilities, with strikes continuing into daylight hours and targeting the capital, Kyiv, as well.
The attacks resulted in at least five deaths and left more than two dozen people injured, including civilians caught in residential areas. Ukrainian authorities reported that homes, transport networks, and energy infrastructure were among the primary targets, underscoring the widespread impact of the offensive.
In central Ukraine’s Poltava region, two people were killed and several others wounded, including a young child who was left in critical condition. Elsewhere, in Kharkiv, a drone strike hit a train, killing a passenger instantly. Zaporizhzhia and Kherson also reported fatalities following combined missile and drone strikes on residential neighbourhoods.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned shortly before the assault that intelligence reports pointed to an imminent large-scale attack. Following the strikes, he urged international allies to accelerate the delivery of air defence systems, emphasising the urgent need to protect civilians from continued aerial bombardment.
The latest wave of attacks comes alongside intensified fighting on the ground. Ukrainian military officials say Russian forces have increased pressure along the roughly 1,250-kilometre frontline, launching repeated assaults in an apparent attempt to breach defensive positions in several strategic areas.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, described the situation as increasingly tense, with Russian troops carrying out simultaneous offensives across multiple sectors. He noted that fierce battles have been reported along much of the front, with Moscow deploying reinforcements in an effort to sustain its momentum.
Military analysts believe these developments could signal the beginning of a long-anticipated Russian spring offensive. Improved weather conditions typically allow for greater troop movement and coordinated operations, making this period critical for both sides in the conflict.
Despite the scale of the assault, Ukraine’s air defence systems reportedly intercepted a large number of incoming drones and missiles. However, officials warn that repeated large-scale attacks could strain these defences over time, especially as the war continues to stretch resources. Western allies have pledged additional air defence systems, but delivery timelines remain a concern for Ukrainian commanders.
The renewed escalation highlights the ongoing intensity of the conflict, which has now stretched well beyond four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. While diplomatic efforts have been attempted intermittently, there has been little progress toward a ceasefire, and fighting continues to dominate the landscape.
In recent weeks, both sides have stepped up their operations. Ukraine has carried out drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, while Moscow has responded with increasingly large and coordinated aerial attacks across Ukrainian territory. The tit-for-tat strikes have intensified, with neither side showing signs of backing down.
As the situation evolves, fears are growing that the conflict could enter a more aggressive phase, with heavier fighting and expanded offensives in the months ahead. For civilians across Ukraine, the latest barrage serves as another stark reminder of the war’s continuing toll, as cities and communities remain under constant threat.
