Big Reform: Greece Introduces Digital Age Checks to Curb Underage Tobacco and Alcohol Purchases

Greece Launches Digital Age Verification System to Block Minors From Tobacco, Alcohol Sales

Athens, Greece — Greece has rolled out a new digital age verification system aimed at preventing minors from purchasing tobacco and alcohol, marking a major step in strengthening child protection laws.

The initiative introduces a secure digital tool that allows retailers to verify a customer’s age instantly before completing a sale. The system is designed to work across both physical stores and online platforms, ensuring that underage individuals cannot easily bypass restrictions.

This move is part of a broader government strategy to enforce stricter regulations on the sale of harmful products to children and teenagers. Greek authorities have already implemented tough penalties for violations, including heavy fines and even potential business licence suspensions for repeat offenders.

The age verification mechanism is built on existing digital infrastructure, including systems similar to the country’s “Kids Wallet” app, which is used for identity verification. Customers may be required to confirm their age through secure digital checks, while online purchases could involve QR code-based verification methods.

In addition to the verification tool, the government has also introduced digital registries to monitor businesses selling tobacco and alcohol. These databases will help authorities track retailers and conduct targeted inspections more efficiently.

Officials say the use of technology will make enforcement easier and more effective, reducing illegal sales to minors. The system also aims to balance strict regulation with data privacy, ensuring that personal information remains protected during the verification process.

The rollout reflects a growing trend across Europe, where governments are increasingly adopting digital solutions to safeguard children from harmful products and online risks. Greece’s latest move positions it among the countries leading efforts to modernise age verification and strengthen youth protection policies.

Greece gets tough: Digital age verification now mandatory for tobacco and alcohol purchases. QR codes, Kids Wallet, and hefty fines for violators.
