Spain is preparing for a rare astronomical spectacle this week, as the country readies itself to host its first total solar eclipse visible from the mainland since 1905. The eclipse, set for 12 August, marks the opening chapter of an extraordinary sequence — two total solar eclipses and one annular eclipse crossing the Iberian Peninsula within roughly eighteen months, a phenomenon astronomers are calling a once-in-a-century celestial trio.
The Moon’s shadow will first sweep across the Arctic Ocean, Greenland and Iceland before racing west-to-east across northern Spain, cutting a path of totality nearly 300 kilometres wide through as many as twelve of the country’s autonomous communities. Researchers hope data gathered during the 2026 and 2027 eclipses will feed into broader efforts to understand solar activity and space weather, work that has practical implications for satellite operations and power grid resilience on Earth.
The economic dimension is significant as well. Analysts with Spain’s Rural Development Network estimate the combined trio of eclipses could generate close to €1.4 billion in economic activity, with much of that impact expected to land in inland and rural provinces that typically see far less international tourism than Spain’s coastal hotspots. Local governments across the path of totality have spent recent months preparing accommodation, transport and public viewing infrastructure to accommodate an anticipated influx of eclipse chasers from across Europe and beyond.
How and where to watch safely
Officials and astronomers are reminding the public that viewing any solar eclipse, including its partial phases, requires proper eye protection such as certified eclipse glasses; looking directly at the sun without such protection, even when it is significantly obscured, can cause permanent eye damage. Public viewing events are planned in multiple cities along the path of totality, including an organised programme in León coordinated with the European Space Agency, alongside informal gatherings expected in parks, beaches and open spaces throughout the affected regions.
Weather remains the one variable outside anyone’s control. Meteorologists note that while northern Spain’s August climate generally offers reasonable odds of clear skies, cloud cover could still obscure the view in some locations, and prospective viewers are being encouraged to have backup viewing spots in mind.
A rare shared moment
