Europe’s Wildfire Season Breaks Records as Burnt Area Surpasses 2025’s Historic High
Europe is enduring its worst wildfire season on record, with official monitoring data showing that nearly half a million hectares of land have already burned this year, a figure that exceeds even the devastating totals recorded during 2025, which itself had been the worst year on record.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System, the area affected by fires across the continent had reached almost 499,000 hectares as of early August, comfortably surpassing both the equivalent figure from the same point in 2025 and the twenty-year long-term average. The system has also recorded more than double the average number of individual fires so far this year, alongside a sharp rise in estimated carbon dioxide emissions linked to the blazes.
A Summer of Relentless Heat
The scale of this year’s fires is directly tied to an exceptionally punishing sequence of heatwaves that has gripped the continent since late spring. Climate monitors recorded June 2026 as the hottest June on record for Western Europe, with average temperatures running more than three degrees Celsius above the historical norm. Temperature anomalies peaked at close to nine degrees above average over parts of France and Germany, while thermometers in southern Spain touched beyond 45 degrees Celsius. France recorded its hottest day since national temperature records began in the late 1940s.
That heat has left vegetation across the Mediterranean tinder-dry, creating ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly once started. Officials say three distinct heatwaves swept the continent between late May and early July alone, compounding the dryness with each successive spike in temperature.
Human and Economic Toll
The human cost of this year’s fire season has been severe. Across Spain and France alone, wildfires have killed at least seventeen civilians, six firefighters and two helicopter crew members, while forcing roughly 330,000 people from their homes at various points during the summer. Spain has experienced what is being described as its deadliest wildfire event in roughly two decades, with many victims caught while attempting to flee, some on foot along dry riverbeds that turned into deadly traps as flames raced downhill. Investigators are examining whether a downed power line may have triggered one of the largest blazes, though the claim has been disputed by the local utility involved.
Greece has emerged as one of the hardest-hit fronts this year. A major fire west of Athens burned for six consecutive days before easing, scorching more than 14,000 hectares across the Attica and Boeotia regions according to satellite mapping. Fires have also swept through parts of Portugal, Italy and Turkey, illustrating how widespread this year’s crisis has become across the Mediterranean basin.
Evacuations, Recovery and Ongoing Risk
While some regions have seen conditions stabilise in recent days, with previously evacuated communities in France’s Gironde region cleared to return home, fire danger remains elevated across large swathes of the continent. Current assessments show extreme fire danger persisting across southern Great Britain, northwestern France, the Alps and the Balkans, with very high risk extending further into central and eastern Europe, Turkey and parts of North Africa. Only northern Scandinavia and pockets of eastern Europe currently sit at comparatively low risk.
Firefighting agencies across the affected countries have been stretched thin by the scale and simultaneity of this year’s blazes, with several nations drawing on European Union civil protection mechanisms that allow member states to share firefighting aircraft, personnel and equipment during periods of overlapping crisis. That cooperation has become an increasingly central pillar of the EU’s response to what officials now describe as a structurally more dangerous fire season, rather than an isolated bad year.
Climate Scientists Point to a Clear Pattern
Researchers studying the link between climate change and extreme weather say this year’s fires fit a well-established pattern: rising global temperatures are making heatwaves more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting, which in turn dries out vegetation and extends the window during which fires can ignite and spread uncontrollably. Attribution scientists have said the conditions behind this summer’s fires in France and elsewhere were made significantly more likely by human-caused climate change.
With the fire season historically continuing well into September in parts of the Mediterranean, officials have cautioned that this year’s already record-breaking total could climb further before conditions ease. For now, emergency services across the continent remain on high alert, and residents in high-risk areas are being urged to stay informed of local evacuation guidance as the crisis continues to unfold.
